Windows is windows is windows September 6, 2010 K. Gorelick 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you need to use Windows then there is no longer any choice--you need to buy Windows 7. No matter what they do to it, it is still windows. As if you could only buy good humor and it only made one flavor--dirt. But you could buy your dirt ice cream on a stick, in a cone, or in a cup.
Calling Windows 7 the best windows ever is like calling the spaghettios the best spaghettios ever. True, but pointless.
More Confusing than Linux (sorta) August 28, 2010 David Cloutman (Oakland, CA United States) I've used Windows since 3.1 and can't say I've ever been a fan. But until recently, I felt that it gave the best desktop experience around. Vista was a huge disappointment. I never bothered with the flashy Aero interface, nor have I with Windows 7, so I have little to say on the matter except the more I can make my GUI look like Windows 95, the happier I am.
What ticks me off most about the post XP OSes, and to a lesser extent with the previous releases, is that the OS fundamentals; security, user management, file management, networking, etc. don't make a lot on sense. Too much complexity and a slavish refusal to remove crufty features have created an OS that is more legacy than new. And that's a huge problem, because the system is too difficult to learn and properly maintain, even for a computer expert.
For instance, I have to click through three dialogs just to figure out who owns a file. Permissions are granted through a completely opaque process, and I have yet to figure out what is special about a junction, and why we need them vs. the classic shortcuts. All I know is I have icons on my system for which I theoretically have privileges as an administrator that I can't access without of going through all sorts of strange hoops. Ironically, in my experience, the Linux security model is really quite a bit simpler and more intuitive to use.
Like many, I had hoped Microsoft would have fixed Vista's problems with Windows 7, but they opted for building DVRs and eye candy and all sorts of things into an operating system that don't belong, instead of focusing on managing the basic functionality of a computer.
It's Windows August 4, 2010 Matt Galvin Eh, it's Windows. It is at least an improvement over XP and Vista but its still overpriced. I use Windows 7 via Bootcamp on my MacBook Pro for gaming. It works flawlessly.
If you need to run Windows, the upgrade is worth it.
Win 7: Works but lacks joy July 29, 2010 Roaming Seer (USA) In the Windows realm, I've used everything from 3, 3.11 Workgroup, 95, 98, XP, Vista and now Win7. Win7 is equivalent to XP with a better gui but more bloat. MS has included the best of Vista while allowing one to tone back Vista's nanny warnings. My PC is setup as an HTPC. It runs pretty well with occasional driver problems but that's a catch-22: lots of vendors (s/w and h/w) making stuff gives you a lot of choices but the cost is occasional program freezes- not a complaint, just reality.
Overall I'm okay with Win7 X64, so why am I only giving it 3 stars? Because this OS makes incremental improvements on XP with a nice GUI that you never enjoy using. A lot of hardware and software is supported, and that along with XP's pending obsolescence are the two biggest reasons to buy it. In fact, all of the current mainstay operating systems could use fresh new replacements to be more intuitive, faster and easier to maintain, but backward compatibility limits, both previous user's familiarity and older program compatibility, limits what's possible.
Overall...
+ Better looking GUI than XP/Vista
+ Better security features than XP
+ Generally responsive
+ X64 bit support is good with a broad range of support for hardware/software
+ Power on and shutdown are faster than Vista, just 12 seconds to turn off.
- Not intuitive. If you do get a problem, google it- don't waste time on Windows help.
- Slow: Cold boots takes 70 seconds to Windows beep prompt, 1:30 until Windows Media Center (set to autoload) ready w/ a 3GHz E8500 Core2Duo, 4GB & 7200rpm Medium-Fast SpinPoint SATA drive. Of course this would improve a lot with a SSD...
- Windows Media Center occasionally locks up even with all the updates.
- OS doesn't play well with others: Tedious to get it to do simple high speed transfers w/ other OSs.
Windows 7...FANTASTIC!!!! July 19, 2010 Roger (USA) Having suffered through Vista, and not wanting a chance of even a vestige of that vile product on my system, I first installed a new hard drive! Then, booted to the Windows 7 install disk. Piece of cake!! I installed the 32 bit version. All of the drivers were there. The install took maybe an hour and a half. Perfect. Love Windows 7!!! If you have been using Vista, Win 7 is the equivalent of a drowning man surfacing for air. I kid you not. Get Windows 7 today!!
Also, I attempted to order from CDW and got a couple of knuckleheads on the phone with them who knew absolutely nothing about the product. Was trying to decide on a version, etc. So, just did my own reseach on the Microsoft site and ordered from Amazon, a reliable source.
